THURSTON COUNTY, WA – Two people were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after their car collided with a vehicle that was fleeing police on Interstate 5 near Rochester, reports KOMO News.
The accident took place on the southbound lanes of I-5, south of Exit 88 to Old Highway 99 Southwest.
According to officials, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and the Lacey Police Department were pursuing a shooting suspect who was in a vehicle traveling southbound and at a high rate of speed. After weaving back and forth between travel lanes, the vehicle took Exit 88 and returned to the southbound highway. The vehicle then reversed course and traveled back onto I-5 when it started heading northbound in the southbound lanes.
Moments after the fleeing vehicle was struck by an uninvolved vehicle, the suspect was arrested at the scene.
An unspecified number of people in the other vehicle were taken to an area hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
An investigation was underway.
