PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Two people suffered critical injuries late Friday morning when a man drove a stolen vehicle into a tent near Tacoma’s South End, reports The News Tribune.

Tacoma Police responded to the scene in the 1800 block of South 82nd Street shortly before 11:00 a.m.

According to authorities, a man in his 20s was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle when he veered off the roadway. Moments later, the car struck a tent on a grassy area before the sidewalk.

Officials said the vehicle then collided with a telephone pole before coming to a rest.

Two people who were inside the tent were rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. They were listed in critical condition upon transport, and as of Friday afternoon, one victim is on life-support.

The driver, who was not reported hurt, was also transported for an evaluation. Upon his release from the hospital, he was arrested on multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated.  Authorities confirmed he was being held without bail and was expected to appear in court for an arraignment Monday.
