BLAINE, WA – A woman suspected of driving while intoxicated caused a wrong-way collision on Portal Way Sunday evening, the Bellingham Harold reports.

The DUI suspect, 80-year-old Ellen M. Bonebrake, was driving a 2014 Cadillac XTS northbound in the southbound lanes of Portal Way when she hit a gray 2010 BMW X3 head-on just north of Birch Bay Lynden Road at around 7:29 p.m.

Local authorities suspect Bonebrake was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she was treated for a broken back. Bonebrake has not been arrested or charged yet.

The BMW driver was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham and treated for a broken arm. Two boys, ages 6 and 9, were in the BMW, but were not injured.

Traffic was blocked by the crash scene for at least an hour.
