PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 43-year-old man was critically injured Wednesday night when he was hit by an SUV in front of his Lakewood home during a police pursuit, reports FOX13 Seattle.
The crash happened in a residential neighborhood in the area of State Route 512 and South Tacoma Way, shortly after 9:30 p.m.
According to authorities, Lakewood officers had joined Milton Police in pursuing a suspect vehicle after reports of road rage and aggravated assault involving a firearm.
A K-9 officer had spotted the suspect’s black SUV and was waiting for assistance when the suspect reversed at a high rate of speed against the officer’s car. As the officer tried to back up to avoid another impact, the squad car hit a vacant car that was parked nearby.
Officials said the victim, who had went outside his residence with a shotgun, fired a shot at the SUV as the suspect sped toward him. The suspect then collided with a parked car in the victim’s driveway, pushing the car into the victim and pinning him against his home.
The victim received aid at the scene before he was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries.
The suspect, a 38-year-old man, was taken into custody and also hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. He faces multiple felony charges.
No other injuries have been reported. An investigation remains in progress.
