PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A man died Tuesday afternoon after his work truck rear-ended a semi-truck on Interstate 5 in Tacoma’s South End neighborhood, reports The News Tribune.

The fatal accident occurred on the southbound lanes just north of South 84th Street at around 2:41 p.m.

According to Washington State Patrol, the man was driving a landscaping truck in the southbound right lane at over 60 miles per hour. At one point, he hit the back of the semi that had slowed for a crash scene ahead.

Tacoma Fire Department crews extricated the victim from the work truck, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene shortly after.

The emergency response compounded delays on the southbound interstate, causing traffic to be backed up near the State Route 16 interchange as of 3:45 p.m.

No further details have been released at this time.
