PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A driver died early Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle semi-truck accident on Interstate 5 in Tacoma, according to KIRO 7 News.

The crash took place on the northbound lanes of I-5 approaching the exit to Portland Avenue, near Emerald Queen Casino.

Tacoma Fire Department crews responded to the scene where the cab of the semi had caught fire moments after the vehicle struck a freeway barrier.

The driver of the semi was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed authorities.

An investigation by Washington State Patrol was underway.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., all previously closed lanes were reopened to traffic.
