WHATCOM COUNTY, WA — A man in his 40s died early Saturday after being struck by a pickup truck in Bellingham’s Puget neighborhood, according to KIRO 7 Seattle.

Bellingham Police were called to the scene in the 1600 block of Lakeway Drive at around 12:30 a.m.

An early investigation indicates a 36-year-old man was driving a pickup truck when he veered off the roadway. Moments later, he collided with the male pedestrian and a light pole.

Officers arrived to find the pedestrian suffering from severe injuries. Shortly after, Bellingham Fire Department crews pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

The driver, who was taken to a hospital to be evaluated for injuries, was found to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail for an investigation into vehicular homicide.

A section of Lakeway Drive between Puget Street and Woburn Street was shut down for more than 12 hours during the response and investigation.
