Are You Suffering From Whiplash After a Car Accident?
Last updated on June 10, 2024
Whiplash and other soft tissue injuries are not apparent on X-Rays, CT scans, MRIs or other in-depth diagnostic testing performed following a serious accident. Therefore, whiplash often goes unnoticed and untreated for a period of time by medical professionals, and is ignored by insurance companies when a claim is finally pursued. However, personal injury lawyer Matthew D. Dubin recognizes that whiplash can in fact be a serious debilitating injury for many people. He strives to help clients obtain the compensation they need for medical treatment and lost wages.

What Is Whiplash?
Whiplash is caused by the unnatural strain of the soft tissue in the neck (strained or sprained muscle, tissue or ligaments). It often occurs as a result of the neck being violently thrust forward and backward from the force of a rear-end truck collision or a head-on car accident. People who suffer from whiplash often endure chronic pain, swelling, muscle spasm and limited range of motion due to the scar tissue built up in the neck muscles.
Many people suffering from whiplash also experience straightening of the curve in the neck (loss of the cervical curve) and suffer from a condition commonly referred to as ‘military neck’. People suffering from this severe form of whiplash also may experience future problems because the area is more difficult to heal and is more susceptible to injury and arthritis in the future.
Medical Treatment for Whiplash
While many people simply cope with the pain of the injury, there are plausible effective treatments for whiplash, such as:
- Observation/pain management: focused on reducing swelling and alleviating pain through prescription painkillers or over-the-counter medications
- Physical therapy: focused on enhancing range of motion and alleviating chronic pain through therapy and exercises
- Chiropractic care and massage therapy: focused on increasing flexibility and function and reducing pain by getting muscles and the spine back into alignment and minimizing scar tissue
Whiplash Is Not a Minor Injury!

The soft tissues in the body include the muscles, tendons and ligaments. And when the body is thrown around in an auto accident, those soft tissues can be stretched or torn. In an auto accident, the occupant’s body is thrown around in ways it wasn’t designed to go, sometimes very violently. It’s very common for soft tissue injuries to be unnoticed for days, sometimes even weeks. It’s generally advisable any time you’ve been involved in an auto accident to go to the emergency room or to your doctor and get checked out. I see my job as giving my clients the information and the tools they need to get the best possible outcome for them through the legal system. Dealing with a personal injury is bad enough, but when you have to deal with the insurance company too, the stress and the inconvenience of that can become too much. Our job is to do all the worrying for my client so you can focus on getting better and getting back to their everyday life.
