PIP – Personal Insurance Protection

What Is Personal Insurance Protection (Personal Injury Protection) And Why Should You Have It?

Personal injury protection is also known a PIP for short. It is an additional layer of coverage offered by insurance companies that will cover your medical expenses if you are involved in a collision. In many cases it will also cover lost wages if you are unable to work. Depending on the type of policy this additional layer of coverage may even cover child care if your injuries have made it difficult for you to take care of your child or take them to school, grocery delivery expenses if you’re unable to shop for yourself, and in the worst case scenario funeral expenses. Here in Washington State PIP is not required. However, PIP is a good thing to have because it will pay for your medical and other expenses no matter who is at fault.

While you may think that you don’t need PIP because you have health insurance, our Everett personal injury attorneys can assure you this is not true. Your health insurance has co pays, deductibles, and can even be out of network. If you have PIP through your auto insurance policy, it can help you cover your deductible, pay additional costs over the limits, and in many cases you may not even need to use your health insurance.

Your Insurance Company Is Not On Your Side

There are issues that may arise when using your PIP coverage. Your insurance company can request an Independent Medical Examination (IME). An IME is supposed to be an objective assessment of your medical condition. The doctor is usually chosen by the insurance company and is paid by the insurance company. These doctors have a referral relationship with the insurance company and it is in their best interest to side with the insurance company. An IME usually arises when your insurance company disagrees with your treatment or injuries diagnosed. Furthermore, they may determine that your treatment is not reasonable and necessary. Insurance companies can and will cut off your PIP coverage before it is exhausted. When this happens you need experienced legal help.
