SEATTLE, WA — A 22-year-old man lost his life early Wednesday following a pedestrian accident on Interstate 5 in Seattle’s South Lake Union area, according to KOMO News.
The incident occurred on the northbound lanes of I-5 just north of Mercer Street, at about 12:45 a.m.
Little information has been made available, but the young man was driving a vehicle that had become disabled on the right shoulder, due to “significant tire and rim damage.”
Authorities said that for reasons still unknown, the man crossed all northbound lanes of the highway on foot until he reached the left shoulder. Shortly after he began crossing back across the northbound highway, he was struck by a 2024 Lexus ES near the right shoulder.
Despite life-saving measures by Seattle Fire Department crews, the young man was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has since been identified as Esteban Cortes, a resident of Marysville.
The driver of the Lexus, a 49-year-old Tacoma man, was transported to Harborview Medical Center for unspecified injuries. According to the WSP, the driver is not expected to be charged.
Multiple northbound lanes were blocked following the wreck but were reopened at about 4:30 a.m.
