News: Young man fatally hit by Monorail in Seattle’s Belltown area

SEATTLE, WA — A 20-year-old man died Sunday night after being struck by the Seattle Center Monorail in downtown Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood, reports KOMO News.

The fatal incident took place near the corner of 5th Avenue and Denny Way, at around 9:00 p.m.

A preliminary investigation by the Seattle Police Department indicates the young man had climbed onto a roof to spray-paint a building near the tracks when he was hit.

Officers arrived to find the male pedestrian unresponsive at the scene. Seattle Fire Department crews worked to administer life-saving measures, but the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities said the Monorail, which serves a span of 5th Avenue between Seattle Center and Westlake Center, was shut down for the remainder of the evening after the incident.

An investigation by SPD detectives and the King County Medical Examiner was underway.
