News: WSP responds to fatal crash on SR-509 in downtown Tacoma

PIERCE COUNTY, WA — One person died Wednesday afternoon after a single-vehicle wreck on State Route 509 in downtown Tacoma, according to KIRO 7 Seattle.

The fatal accident happened on the southbound lanes of SR-509 at Interstate 705. It was first publicly reported by Trooper Robert Reyer shortly before 2:00. p.m.

Officials have not said what led up to the crash, but one person was pronounced deceased after a car collided with a barrier. The Washington State Patrol and crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation responded to the scene.

In the immediate aftermath, the right two lanes of SR-509 were closed at the intersection, in addition to the SR-509 southbound ramp to I-705 northbound and the southbound I-705 ramp to SR-509 northbound. The closures remained in place for an extended time but were opened following the response and initial investigation.
