News: Wrong-way driver, others injured in series of crashes on SR-539 near Bellingham

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA — A wrong-way driver caused multiple crashes Wednesday evening near north Bellingham, injuring himself and a number of others, according to KOMO News.

The series of crashes occurred on a span of State Route 539 just north of Kelly Road, in an area between Lynden and Bellingham. Washington State Patrol troopers responded to the scene at about 7:27 p.m. after dispatchers received over two dozen calls about an erratic driver traveling against traffic.

Details remain limited, but WSP officials said a 45-year-old man was behind the wheel of the wrong-way vehicle, which hit three different vehicles.

The causing driver, who suffered serious injuries, was rushed to St. Joe’s Hospital.

Officials said other injuries were reported but have not released any further information on the impacted parties.

A section of SR-539 was shut down for about two hours in both directions during the emergency response.

An investigation was in progress.
