PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 67-year-old woman died early Thursday after a hit-and-run collision involving a suspected DUI driver on Interstate 5 near downtown Tacoma, according to The Chronicle.
The fatal crash happened in the southbound interstate near Portland Avenue at around 2:20 a.m.
Washington State Patrol said a Jeep Wrangler rear-ended a Lexus sedan in the southbound lanes, leaving the second car badly damaged as its driver led the scene.
A woman who had been sitting in the backseat of the Lexus was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed authorities.
Two other occupants in the Lexus, the male driver and female occupant in the front-passenger seat, were taken to a nearby hospital to be evaluated. It was unclear whether or not they sustained any serious injuries.
WSP said troopers later located the causing Jeep Wrangler abandoned along I-5 near Pacific Avenue, more than a mile from the crash site.
The suspect driver, a 25-year-old woman, was later found and detained. Troopers believe she was impaired at the time of the accident. She was booked into Pierce County Jail and now faces a charge of vehicular homicide.
