WHATCOM COUNTY, WA — A 31-year-old woman and her dog died late Tuesday night after a two-vehicle collision involving a wrong-way driver on Interstate 5 in south Bellingham, reports KIRO 7 News.
The fatal accident occurred on the southbound lanes approaching Nulle Road, near Lake Samish, shortly before 11:30 p.m.
An early investigation by Washington State Patrol indicates a 20-year-old woman was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when she collided head-on with the victim’s vehicle.
Authorities confirmed the victim and her dog, who was a passenger in the vehicle, both died from their injuries at the scene.
WSP said the wrong-way driver was arrested for suspected impairment and was transported to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.
All southbound lanes of I-5 in the area were shut down for about four hours during the response and investigation.
