PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A woman was killed Saturday afternoon in a hit-and-run collision on State Route 7 near south Parkland, reports The News Tribune.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and Washington State Patrol troopers responded to the scene on the highway (Pacific Avenue) at 143rd Street South. Officials said the wreck was first reported at around 3:10 p.m.
A preliminary investigation shows the woman was behind the wheel of a sedan turning left onto SR-7 from 143rd Street when it was struck by another sedan driven by a 25-year-old man.
The female driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died.
WSP troopers said the man, a Puyallup resident, fled from the scene on foot but was later apprehended. He was set to be booked into jail for an investigation into “vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run and eluding.” Officials learned the suspect’s license had been suspended and that there were warrants out for his arrest.
A section of the highway was blocked in both directions during the response. By 5:40 p.m., all motorists were asked to detour around the scene through 136th and 146th streets.
