WHATCOM COUNTY, WA — Two Whatcom County road workers were hospitalized after being struck by a wrong-way driver suspected of DUI in Bellingham, according to KOMO News.
Washington State Patrol troopers and first responders arrived at the scene in the 3000 block of Lummi Shore Road at around 2:30 p.m.
An early investigation found that a 28-year-old man was driving a Toyota against traffic in the northbound lane of Lummi Shore Road when his vehicle crossed the centerline, struck a guardrail and continued traveling for 250 feet against the rail. The vehicle then struck the two workers doing plant maintenance on the road’s shoulder before crashing into a parked Whatcom County truck.
The two workers, a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old, were transported to Bellingham’s St. Joseph Hospital in serious condition.
The Toyota’s two passengers, two boys aged 5 and 10, were not reported injured.
The at-fault driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene before he was arrested for an investigation into vehicular assault and DUI.
