SNOHOMISH COUNTY, WA — Two people died early Thursday after being struck by a vehicle while crossing State Route 9 in Arlington, reports KIRO 7 News.
Arlington police said the fatal incident occurred at the 204th Street Northeast intersection at around 2:38 a.m.
An early investigation indicates a 28-year-old man drove through the controlled intersection and hit both pedestrians while they were using a marked crosswalk. Authorities believe the pair were either walking to or leaving a nearby convenience store.
A responding officer arrived to find the victims unconscious and unresponsive on the ground. They were pronounced deceased at the scene shortly after.
Authorities said the driver stayed after the scene and was later arrested and transported to the Snohomish County Jail. He is currently being investigated for “two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of driving under the influence.”
The event caused a section of SR-9 to shut down for several hours in both directions before reopening at around 1:00 p.m.
