JEFFERSON COUNTY, WA — Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck on U.S. Highway 101 near south Port Townsend, according to The Leader.
Washington State Patrol said the accident occurred over a stretch of the highway at Orcas Drive shortly before 3:00 p.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates a 25-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 1992 Chevrolet Astro van when he failed to yield to a semi-trailer truck while turning onto the southbound highway from Orcas Drive. The van entered the path of the northbound truck driven by a 63-year-old man and was struck.
The impact of the crash pushed the van into a ditch along the southbound highway.
Authorities said the driver of the van, along with a 27-year-old male passenger, were airlifted to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.
It was unclear whether or not the truck driver was hurt.
A section of US-101 was shut down near the State Route 104 interchange but was reopened shortly after 6:00 p.m.
WSP said the van was totaled and had to be towed from the scene.
