News: Two hospitalized after suspected DUI crash off downtown Tacoma overpass

PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Two people were injured early Sunday when a vehicle crash-landed off an overpass and onto Interstate 705 in downtown Tacoma, reports KIRO 7 News.

The collision occurred off the State Route 509 overpass, near Don Pugnetti Park.

Washington State Patrol said a 21-year-old male driver struck a barrier, causing the vehicle to run off the overpass and land on its wheels 50 feet below.

An 18-year-old female passenger was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, while the driver was transported to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.

All southbound lanes of I-705 in the area were shut down for almost four hours during the emergency response.

Authorities said the driver was taken into custody after being suspected of impairment at the scene. He now faces a charge of vehicular assault for the injuries suffered by his passenger.
