News: Two hospitalized after accident aboard submarine docked in Bremerton

KITSAP COUNTY, WA — Two U.S. Navy personnel were injured last Saturday during an accident on a nuclear ballistic missile submarine currently docked in Bremerton, reports FOX13 Seattle.

The incident took place on the USS Lousiana, located at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility, on April 2.

Officials said a routine air test led to a forward compartment rapidly decompressing. The blast of air caused the structure’s scaffolding and other equipment to “dislodge,” creating a loud boom that was heard by multiple residents in the area.

Two crew members were taken to a local medical facility with injuries considered non-life-threatening.

Five other personnel were also evaluated by medics, but didn’t require treatment.

Authorities noted the submarine’s nuclear propulsion area was not impacted by the event.

According to a shipyard spokesperson, an investigation into the cause of the accident remained ongoing as of Sunday.
