News: Three killed after high-speed DUI crash in Yakima

YAKIMA COUNTY, WA — Three people died Tuesday night in a two-vehicle collision that severely injured a young child and another person in west Yakima, according to KOMO News.

Yakima police responded to the scene near the intersection of 48th Avenue and West Nob Hill Boulevard at around 11:18 p.m.

A 20-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 1994 Ford Escort speeding northbound on 48th Avenue when he ran a red light and slammed into an eastbound 2007 Mitsubishi Galant.

Two passengers in the Mitsubishi, a 23-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A 20-year-old woman who was also a passenger in the Mitsubishi was transported to a nearby hospital where she died from her injuries.

A 5-year-old girl from the Mitsubishi suffered severe injuries and was transported to Yakima Valley Memorial before being transferred to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. As of Wednesday morning, she was listed in stable condition.

The driver of the Mitsubishi sustained minor injuries and has since left a hospital.

The driver of the Escort was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries. Police say he faces charges of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault upon release from the hospital.

Authorities have determined that intoxication and high speed contributed to the fatal crash.
