KING COUNTY, WA — A teenager died early Tuesday after a stolen vehicle he was driving crashed in Black Diamond, leaving two other teens injured, according to KOMO News.
Authorities said the wreck occurred at the intersection of 224th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 297th Street, shortly before 1:15 a.m.
The King County Sheriff’s Office said a silver Hyundai Elantra had been reported stolen out of Kent by armed teenage carjackers who had intentionally rear-ended the vehicle.
At one point, the Elantra was seen traveling westbound, in the wrong direction and at a high rate of speed, in the 22000 block of Southeast 296th Street.
Though officers from the Black Diamond Police Department had joined the KCSO in the search for the stolen car, officials clarified that a pursuit was never initiated. The fleeing vehicle was later discovered wrecked against a tree at the intersection.
First responders rushed the vehicle’s three occupants, all believed to be between ages 15 and 17, to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center for serious, life-threatening injuries. Officials later confirmed that one of the three patients, identified as the driver, had succumbed to his injuries.
An investigation remains ongoing. The KCSO said that while the stolen vehicle had been recovered and impounded, a search warrant is still pending.
