TACOMA, WA – A 17-year-old teenager is being charged as an adult in connection with a fatal crash that happened on Sunday, King5 reports.
The 17-year-old adult faces the following charges: reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of cannabis, unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicular homicide, attempting to elude police, and charges of second-degree murder.
The events unfolded when the 17-year-old teenager stole a Hyundai vehicle and conducted a dangerous U-turn at the intersection of Pacific Highway East and Port of Tacoma Road, ran a red light, and cut off another driver.
A Washington State Patrol trooper saw the Hyundai stop, and saw the Hyundai driver, the 17-year-old boy, exit his vehicle, run towards another vehicle before re-entering the Hyundai.
The trooper initiated a pursuit. The teenager drove 110 mph in a 60 mph zone on SR 509 before traveling on westbound South 21st Street and heading towards South C Street. The car went airborne before landing on all four tires and sliding up a hill.
The car spun sideways and crashed into a power pole.
The 17-year-old was left with injuries deemed serious. The teenager had two passengers with him. One of them, a 17-year-old girl, died from her injuries despite being given CPR by first responders, and the other passenger was uninjured.
