STEVENS PASS, WA – The Washington State Department of Transportation reopened Stevens Pass this morning following a cautionary overnight closure.
KIRO 7 reports that heavy snowfall led WDOT to close the pass beginning Tuesday afternoon so they could perform avalanche abatement procedures. Westbound traffic was stopped from Leavenworth on, while eastbound traffic was halted from about six miles east Skykomish.
US 2 Stevens Pass has reopened with chains required. That means if you are AWD/4WD you still need to carry chains in case you need them. Never used your chains? Practice before you head up the pass. Drive for conditions and give plenty of room to the car in front of you. pic.twitter.com/DfVWPwpUTb

The pass was reopened at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, as the department beat its noon estimate by several hours. Chains are still required for vehicles traversing US 2 in the area, and authorities recommend that motorists exercise caution.
