News: Semi loses traction, causes 38-vehicle wreck on I-90 in Ellensburg

KITTITAS COUNTY, WA — A semi-truck driver faces charges after a major crash Wednesday morning involving 38 vehicles on Interstate 90 in south Ellensburg, reports KOMO News.

The multi-vehicle wreck caused the eastbound interstate to close from milepost 115, near South Main Street. It was first reported at about 5:30 a.m.

According to the Washington State Patrol, one semi-truck driver was traveling too fast through the area’s freezing fog conditions, which is considered a main factor in the wreck. The semi eventually lost traction over the icy roadway and came to a stop across all eastbound lanes. Moments later, a series of crashes occurred.

Multiple vehicles, including 20 passenger cars and 13 semi-trucks, were impacted by the event.

WSP reported three people were injured, but the extent of their injuries was not disclosed. Several vehicles sustained extensive damage, with many having run off the roadway and at least one semi overturning.

The closure remained in place for about 10 hours as tow crews worked to clear the vehicles and debris.
