PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A man was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a semi-truck overturned and caught fire on Interstate 5 in Fife, reports KOMO News.
The accident happened on the northbound lanes at Exit 136A to the Port of Tacoma. It was first recorded by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) at 2:22 p.m.
Few details have been disclosed, but the Washington State Patrol said the man was behind the wheel of the semi when he appeared to have fallen asleep. Moments later, the semi struck a barrier, causing the vehicle to roll and catch fire.
A Good Samaritan was able to help the male driver out of the semi’s cab before crews arrived. The Tacoma Fire Department said the patient, who suffered serious injuries, was rushed to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.
Firefighters worked to contain flames and smoke emitting from the semi, which was carrying a full load of produce on pallets. As the crash clearance remained active toward the evening, commuters were warned of ongoing delays on both the interstate and area side roads.
