PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A pickup truck slammed into the TwinStar Credit Union in east Lakewood early Friday during an attempted burglary, according to KIRO 7 News.
The smash-and-grab was reported off the intersection of 96th Street Southwest and South Tacoma Way, at around 5:15 a.m.
Surveillance video viewed from inside the credit union showed a pickup truck striking the business storefront, and two to three occupants exiting the vehicle to enter the building. The suspects appeared to have hooked a chain to the ATM from the inside before using the truck to pull it out of the building.
The suspects then fled in the pickup, believed to be a red Ford 250, which was seen heading eastbound on 96th Street.
For reasons still unclear, authorities later heard the pickup dragging the ATM westbound on 96th. The ATM eventually became unattached from the truck as it made a turn at the South Tacoma Way intersection and sideswiped another car.
Authorities got close enough behind the suspect vehicle to record a license plate number, but did not engage in a pursuit due to a state statute regarding property crime. The vehicle was last seen going southbound on South Tacoma Way.
No injuries have been reported, and despite cosmetic damage, the ATM remained intact. No other details have been shared at this time.
