PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A man died early Monday after being struck by multiple vehicles on Interstate 5 in Fife, according to KOMO News.
The fatal incident unfolded on the southbound lanes near Exit 137 to 54th Avenue East, shortly before 3:00 a.m.
While the circumstances of the event remain unclear, officials confirmed the man was pronounced deceased after a pedestrian crash involving more than one vehicle. The victim was said to have been holding a pink stuffed animal at the time he was struck.
At least one of the involved drivers remained at the scene following the incident. No other injuries were reported.
Authorities closed a section of I-5 southbound for more than four hours. All traffic was forced to divert off the interstate at the 54th Avenue East offramp, and then onto Pacific Highway and Port of Tacoma Road before returning to I-5 southbound.
By 7:10 a.m., all lanes were reopened to normal traffic.
No charges have been reported at this time. An investigation remains underway.
