SEATTLE, WA — A 65-year-old man was hospitalized late Thursday morning after being struck by a King County Metro bus in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, according to Capitol Hill Seattle.
The incident took place at the busy intersection of 17th Avenue and East Madison Street shortly before 11:15 a.m.
A witness told authorities that at the time of the impact, the westbound 11 bus abruptly came to a stop on East Madison near the Trader Joe’s, in an area undergoing construction to accommodate a new bus route.
Seattle Fire crews had to extricate the victim from underneath the bus after he became trapped as a result of the crash. He received treatment at the scene and then was transported to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition. Authorities said he suffered abrasions, lower back pain, and possibly injuries to his chest.
The patient was initially believed to be a Seattle Department of Transportation construction worker, but an SDOT official has since confirmed the victim is not associated.
An early report indicates the pedestrian may have slipped and fell in the path of the bus, but an investigation remains underway.
