News: Pedestrian dies after being hit by vehicle on south Puyallup sidewalk

KING COUNTY, WA — A pair of crashes Tuesday morning near Meridian Place Shopping Center in south Puyallup resulted in the death of a male pedestrian, according to KIRO 7 Seattle.

The fatal incident took place in front of the Walgreens along South Meridian Street, prompting a response from Puyallup Police and Central Pierce Fire and Rescue crews at about 9:19 a.m.

Early reports suggested that the victim had been thrown out of a pickup truck before the vehicle struck the Walgreens, but authorities later determined that he was not a passenger but a pedestrian who was walking northbound on the sidewalk.

Preliminary details show the suspect, a 41-year-old man, was driving the pickup when it hit the victim from the back. The pickup then veered across all lanes of South Meridian before crashing into the business.

First responders arrived to find the male pedestrian unconscious in a flowerbed and suffering from severe injuries. Despite life-saving measures, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to identify him.

Puyallup Police said the driver was arrested and booked into Pierce County Jail for an investigation into “DUI and vehicular homicide.”
