SEATTLE, WA – According to KING 5, the officer who struck and killed a woman with his patrol vehicle at Dexter Ave N and Thomas St on Jan. 23, 2023, has been fired from the Seattle Police Department.
Officer Kevin Dave was responding to a drug overdose call when he was driving 74 mph in a 25 mph zone and hit Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, as she walking in a crosswalk.
Dave had his lights on but not his emergency lights. As he entered the intersection, he chirped his siren.
SPD Sgt. Patrick Michaud said in a letter that Dave violated four SPD policies i the incident. The policies are:
Employees must adhere to laws, city policy, and department policy
Officers shall modify their emergency response when appropriate
Officers are responsible for the safe operation of their police vehicle
Officers use emergency lights for emergency response
Dave pleaded guilty to second-degree negligent driving in December. He will be able to keep his license if he pays $5,000 and completes a traffic safety course.
