News: Motorcyclist killed in crash after driver runs red light in Lakeland South

KING COUNTY, WA — A 53-year-old Puyallup man died Tuesday morning after his motorcycle was struck by a DUI suspect at a Lakeland South intersection, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The fatal crash happened on the northbound lanes of State Route 161 at 28th Avenue South, at about 5:03 a.m.

A preliminary investigation shows a 23-year-old Tacoma man was driving a 2013 Toyota Scion westbound on SR-161 when he failed to stop at a red light. The victim was riding a black 2012 Harley Davidson FXDF northbound when he entered the intersection on a green light. Moments later, he was hit by the Toyota head-on as the car continued southbound on SR-161.

WSP confirmed the motorcyclist died from his injuries at the scene. He was found to have been wearing a United States Department of Transportation-compliant helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Toyota, who was not reported hurt, was suspected of impairment. He has since been charged with vehicular homicide.

Both vehicles were totaled in the accident and were towed from the scene.
