PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 69-year-old man died Friday afternoon after his vehicle crashed into a retention pond in South Hill, according to KIRO 7 Seattle.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said the accident happened off of Sunrise Parkway shortly before 3:00 p.m.
According to officials, the victim’s vehicle appeared to have traveled off of the curvy roadway before proceeding into the grass, over a bush, and then into the pond. The male driver was able to call dispatchers and provide the location of the wreck about five to ten minutes before it became submerged.
Responding deputies arrived on the scene to find the vehicle in the water. One deputy removed his gear and attempted to swim out into the water but was unable to locate the vehicle.
A dive team and fire department crews soon responded to the site and were able to extricate the victim from the submerged wreckage, but the patient died en route to the hospital.
No other occupants were discovered and no other injuries were reported.
An investigation remains open and ongoing.
