News: Impairment suspected in Veterans Day crash in Tacoma 

TACOMA, WA – Impairment was suspected in a serious crash with injuries that involved a bicyclist, a skateboard rider, and another vehicle in Tacoma on Veterans Day. 

The collision occurred around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Kiro7 said. The alleged DUI driver was driving recklessly and reportedly speeding on 96th Street South when they crashed into a bicyclist and a skateboard rider. The pedestrians were two men in their 30s, who were traveling outside of the marked crosswalk. 

The alleged impaired motorist then crashed his vehicle into another car. The force of the collision caused the bicyclist to go through the one vehicle’s windshield. 

The occupants of the other car, a mother and her 2-year-old child, sustained some cuts and bruises, while the cyclist was left with life-threatening injuries. The suspected impaired driver also sustained cuts to his face, while the skateboard rider was uninjured. 

Seattle police said the driver responsible for the crash was slurring his words and smelled of alcohol. The driver claimed he was coming back from a casino but denied having drugs or alcohol in his system. He also failed to understand that he crashed into the four individuals, despite being told several times by officers. 

Police asked the male driver several more questions, but he declined to answer because he did not have a lawyer present. 

Police arrested the man and booked him for vehicular assault, making a false statement, and reckless driving. The man took a blood test, and the results are pending.
