News: Fiery hit-and-run collision reported on I-405 SB offramp in Bellevue

KING COUNTY, WA — Authorities are searching for a driver who caused and then fled a fiery crash involving an electric Hummer late Thursday afternoon on Interstate 405 in Bellevue, according to KOMO News.

The accident happened on the ramp from southbound I-405 to eastbound I-90, prompting a large response from fire crews just before 5:00 p.m.

An early investigation by the Washington State Patrol indicates the driver was driving a black four-door Audi with black rims when it collided with a HUMV and the barrier before bursting into flames.

The Audi, which sustained damaged to its driver’s side, was then seen fleeing the scene.

While no injuries have been reported, responding firefighters had to remain on the scene for hours to control the resulting fire and remove the vehicle from the connector ramp. Authorities said the response was extended because of the involvement of the HUMV’s lithium-ion batteries, which made extinguishing the blaze difficult.

Three hours later, the ramp was reopened after being completely blocked. The fire in the battery only completely stopped smoldering after 10 hours.

Authorities continued to investigate and search for the fleeing vehicle.
