News: DUI suspect arrested after injury crash involving Thurston Co. sheriff in Yelm

THURSTON COUNTY, WA — A 29-year-old man was taken into custody for alleged impairment after a wreck last Sunday in Yelm that injured the Thurston County sheriff, according to KOMO News.

The collision occurred in the area of Lawrence Lake Road Southeast and 153rd Avenue Southeast at about 3:30 p.m.

Officials with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office said the sheriff was driving a marked department vehicle southbound on Lawrence lake Road Southeast when a Ford Ranger pickup truck drove past a stop sign. Though the sheriff tried to swerve, his vehicle hit a trailer being towed by the pickup.

First responders transported the sheriff by airlift to Harborview Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.

The Washington State Patrol said the suspect in the Ford Ranger was not injured but was arrested for driving under the influence. Court documents indicate he admitted to using methamphetamines the night prior, but authorities determined he was still impaired at the time of the wreck. He has since been arrested and appeared before a judge where a bail of $25,000 was set. He faces potential criminal charges of vehicular assault.

In the evening of the same day, the sheriff’s office indicated the sheriff had been released from the hospital. As of April 10, he was cleared to return to work.

An investigation remains ongoing.
