News: Driver hurt as semi flips, jackknifes against I-5 overpass in Lakewood

KING COUNTY, WA — Minor injuries were reported early Thursday after a semi-truck overturned on Interstate 5 in Lakewood, according to KIRO 7 News.

The accident happened on the northbound lanes at the exit to State Route 512, or South Tacoma Way, at around 2:51 a.m.

Washington State Patrol troopers say driver fatigue may have led to the semi veering off the right side of the roadway. Preliminary details indicate the semi then traveled up an embankment, rolled onto its side, and collided with the overpass, which caused the cab to jackknife and come to rest in a vertical position.

Despite significant vehicle damage, the driver was able to be pulled out of the cab with only minor injuries.

Three of the four total lanes were blocked during the response and investigation. At around 6:45 a.m., after authorities determined the wreck caused no structural damage to the overpass, all lanes were reopened, but motorists were warned of a four-mile backup that remained.
