SEATTLE, WA — A 22-year-old man was found deceased early Tuesday after a two-car rollover collision on the Ship Canal Bridge near Seattle’s University District, reports KIRO 7 Seattle.
According to authorities, the fatal wreck occurred on the southbound interstate just south of Northeast 45th Street. It was first reported shortly after 4:40 a.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the victim was inside a Mazda that had broken down on the bridge when the car was struck by a Toyota. The impact of the crash caused the victim to eject from the Mazda, off the bridge, and into the water about 182 feet below.
Both vehicles came to rest flipped onto their roofs.
The Washington State Patrol said the driver of the Toyota, also 22, was suspected of DUI at the scene and has since been arrested.
Multiple water rescue teams were called to the area in search of the ejected driver. After an hour, Seattle Fire officials declared the search had become a recovery mission. At about 9:00 a.m., crews located the body of the victim.
By 8:00 a.m., the roadway had reopened to traffic.
