SEATTLE, WA — A 40-year-old man was hospitalized Monday night after crashing his car into a tree while fleeing police in south Seattle, according to KOMO News.
Authorities say the events unfolded near the 1800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way at around 9:40 p.m.
Officers made an attempt to pull the driver over for a minor traffic offense, prompting the suspect to speed north on the road, where his white BMW later collided with a tree.
The officers and a passerby rescued the driver from the smoking wreck, which later erupted in flames, setting off ammunition in the vehicle.
The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.
No one else was reported injured.
The impact of the crash sent the front axle of the car behind the vehicle and knocked out two wheels, according to police. Debris from the car also struck at least two nearby homes and another vacant vehicle.
Authorities indicated the suspect was a convicted felon with an outstanding arrest warrant for separate crimes. He now faces additional charges as a result of the the incident.
