PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A man in his 40s was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle in central Tacoma, according to The News Tribune.
Tacoma Police officers and Tacoma Fire crews responded to the scene on 6th Avenue and North Warner Street at around 5:21 p.m.
Court documents indicate a 34-year-old woman was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound on the 6th Avenue in the same direction as the cyclist when she hit the bicycle, causing the rider to land on the hood of her car.
The driver told authorities she had been traveling at about 35 to 40 miles per hour and did not see the cyclist in the roadway.
Officials said the victim suffered broken ribs and was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center.
Responding officers noted the woman displayed signs of impairment and a breath test showed her blood-alcohol level to be at 0.170, above the .08 legal limit. She was taken into custody and has since undergone a series of other breath tests and a blood draw.
On Wednesday, August 24, the female driver was formally charged with DUI vehicular assault in Pierce County Superior Court.
