News: Accident blocks lane on I-5 SB, causing backup on Seattle’s Ship Canal Bridge

SEATTLE, WA — A vehicle crash late Tuesday afternoon closed a right center lane on Interstate 5 near Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood, according to Washington State Department of Transportation.

The collision occurred on the southbound lanes just south of Mercer Street. It was first reported by WSDOT at 3:50 p.m.

It was unclear what led up to the event, but footage taken at the scene shows WSDOT’s Incident Response Team (IRT) responding to what looks like a multi-vehicle wreck. Four vehicles can be seen stopped in the middle of the roadway, and crews were working to clear the area.

By 4:05 p.m., the closure had created a four-mile traffic backup over the Ship Canal Bridge.

Shortly after, however, the vehicles had been cleared from the roadway and all lanes heading into downtown Seattle were reopened.
