TACOMA, WA — Six people died Sunday morning following a two-vehicle wreck on State Route 509 in Tacoma that left three other people injured, reports KOMO News.
The fatal crash happened on a stretch of SR-509 at the intersection with Alexander Avenue. It was first recorded by the Washington State Department of Transportation at about 11:20 a.m.
According to the Washington State Patrol, two Tacoma residents, a man and a woman, were in a white 2021 BMZ X7 heading northbound on SR-509 when the car struck a 2021 Kia Forte that was traveling eastbound on Alexander Avenue.
Authorities said at the time of the wreck, seven people were inside of the Kia Forte, which only had a five-seat capacity. Six of those occupants, at least four of whom were Arizona residents aged 19 to 25, were pronounced deceased.
The seventh occupant of the Kia, a 21-year-old Arizona man, suffered critical injuries and was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center.
The two occupants of the BMW were also taken to local hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
A section of the roadway was blocked off for about seven hours during the response and initial investigation. The WSP said speed and a failure to stop for the red light contributed to the wreck.
