News: 2 killed, 1 hurt in rollover crash on I-5 near Southcenter

KING COUNTY, WA — Two men died Friday night after a two-vehicle wreck on Interstate 5 near the Westfield Southcenter shopping mall in Tukwila, reports Kent Reporter.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the fatal accident happened on the northbound lanes just south of Southcenter Boulevard, at around 10:47 p.m.

Officials said a 24-year-old Tacoma man was driving northbound in lane 1 when, for reasons still being investigated, he lost control. His vehicle then rolled across the entire northbound interstate before coming to a stop in the HOV lane, on its driver’s side. Moments later, the roof of the overturned vehicle was hit by a second vehicle driven by a 59-year-old Seattle man.

The Tacoma man and his passenger, a 35-year-old Federal Way man, both died from their injuries at the scene, confirmed the WSP.

Medics transported the Seattle man to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center with undisclosed injuries. Troopers said he was taken into custody for an “investigation of vehicular homicide,” citing drugs or alcohol as a factor.

No further details have been provided at this time, but officials noted all occupants were wearing their seat belts at the time of the wreck.
