YAKIMA COUNTY, WA — Two people were injured, one critically, Friday morning when a car collided with power boxes and the control tower at Yakima Air Terminal, according to YakTriNews.
A Yakima County sheriff’s deputy said the events unfolded on West Washington Avenue, near South 24th Avenue, shortly after 3:00 a.m.
Authorities found a 19-year-old man was driving eastbound at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a turn onto South 24th Avenue. Moments later, the car struck control boxes and the airport control tower.
The teen driver suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. His passenger, a 23-year-old man, also suffered serious injuries.
As of this writing, the condition of both patients remain unclear. Authorities said they believe the driver was impaired at the time of the crash. He faces a potential charge of vehicular assault.
All nearby facilities lost power due to the impact of the crash, causing the airport to become inoperable. Officials announced all flights in and out of the airport were paused until power can be restored.
Eastbound lanes of Washington Avenue were shut down at the intersection as crews worked to repair the damage, but all westbound lanes were open.
