PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Two people died early Wednesday after a high-speed crash that left a teenager seriously hurt at a Tacoma intersection, reports KOMO News.
The fatal collision occurred at the corner of South 38th Street and Pacific Avenue, shortly before 4:20 a.m.
Tacoma Police Department officials said a man was driving northbound on Pacific Avenue when his vehicle was hit by a vehicle traveling eastbound on South 38th Street. The second vehicle was found to have traveled through the intersections at high speeds. Moments after hitting the first vehicle, it collided with a pole and caught fire.
Of the second vehicle’s three occupants, two were pronounced deceased on the scene. Good Samaritans, including a Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office employee, was able to pull the third occupant, a 15-year-old boy, from the burning car.
The driver of the first vehicle, who is believed to have been traveling on a green light at the time of the wreck, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was able to take himself to a hospital.
At this time, investigators said they have reason to believe the two deceased occupants may be juveniles, as the bodies appeared “smaller.” It remains unclear whether they were related to the 15-year-old boy, who had not been taken into custody as early Wednesday morning.
An investigation by the TPD’s Collision Investigation Team remains ongoing. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors in the fatal wreck.
