KING COUNTY, WA — One person suffered a major injury Monday morning due to a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 5 in Federal Way, reports KOMO News.
The collision took place on the southbound lanes at milepost 145, in an area south of South 320th Street and north of South 320th Street. It was first recorded by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) at about 5:25 a.m.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson initially indicated a car and a semi-tractor were involved, but later updated the report to include two other vehicles.
Authorities have not released the sequence of events leading up to the crash, but the driver of a passenger car suffered critical injuries. First responders rushed the patient to Harborview Medical Center.
Four right lanes on southbound I-5 were blocked for almost an hour. Shortly after, crews had to close the entire southbound interstate during the crash clearance and investigation.
At about 8:20 a.m., only the right lane remained blocked, and by 9:20 a.m., nearly four hours after the initial report, all southbound lanes were reopened. The extended closure created a backup in the area that at one point reached four miles long, down to State Route 516.
Though the cause of the wreck has not been confirmed, the National Weather Service advised drivers of icy road condition in the Puget Sound region that same morning.
