On Behalf of | Jul 12, 2024 | Motorcycle Accidents |

We ride for various reasons, and we try to not think about potential crashes. However, every Washington motorcyclist knows of the risk of accidents. Motorcyclists represent less than 5% of road users, but roughly 1 in 5 motorcycle crashes results in catastrophic injury or death.

In 2018, there were 77 fatal motorcycle accidents and at least 375 that caused serious injuries in Washington state. Overall, 2,138 motorcycle crashes were recorded that year. By 2022, preliminary data showed an alarming increase to 132 motorcycle rider fatalities. This is a 43% rise from the previous year.

Common injuries from motorcycle accidents

Motorcycle accidents can lead to a wide range of injuries, many with long-term effects. Here are some of the most common: Head injuries, such as concussions and traumatic brain injuries, are prevalent in motorcycle accidents. Helmets can significantly reduce the severity of these injuries. Due to the exposed nature of motorcyclists, there is also a higher risk of limb amputation in severe accidents.

During a fall, riders often extend their arms instinctively to break the fall. This, unfortunately, is the source of “biker’s arm.” It is nerve damage that causes numbness and loss of motor function in the affected arm.

Road rash is another frequent crash injury. Road rash occurs when skin is driven into the pavement while a rider slides after a fall. Even minor incidents can cause painful abrasions that may lead to infections.

Fractures, particularly in the arms, legs and collarbones, are common. These injuries often necessitate surgery and prolonged recovery. Severe accidents can also damage the spinal cord,  which can result in paralysis or reduced mobility.

Motorcycle accidents can also cause internal injuries, such as damage to organs, internal bleeding or a ruptured spleen. These injuries might not be immediately obvious but can have severe consequences. Plus, motorcycle accidents can also cause psychological trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression.

Motorcycle accidents in Washington state are a grave concern, often leading to severe injuries and fatalities. It is vital for all road users to understand these risks and take appropriate measures to ensure road safety.
