News: Bail reduced for suspect who fatally struck trooper on I-5 near Marysville

MARYSVILLE, WA – The bail has been reduced for the man who allegedly fatally collided with a Washington State Trooper on  I-5 SB near 136th St NE on March 2, according to FOX 13.

Raul Benitez Santana, 32, was allegedly driving an SUV south on I-5 at high speeds when he strayed off the road and onto the shoulder, where he struck a parked Washington State Police patrol car occupied by Christopher M. Gadd, 27, around 3 a.m. Gadd died in the crash.

Benitez Santana then collided with a van with six passengers. Rescue crews transported the van driver to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Nobody else was hurt in the collision.

Authorities arrested Benitez Santana and took him into custody for vehicular homicide.

Benitez Santana told officers he had smoked marijuana and consumed beers around 9 p.m.

Benitez Santana was initially held on $1 million bail. He is now being held for $100,000 for vehicular homicide involving alcohol or drugs and vehicular assault.
