KING COUNTY, WA — A hit-and-run crash involving a stolen pickup truck Sunday afternoon in Burien has claimed the life of a man and left a child in critical condition, reports KOMO News.
The incident occurred at the corner of South 128th Street and 22nd Avenue South, some time after King County Sheriff’s Office deputies in marked vehicles spotted the stolen Toyota Corolla at around 11:30 a.m. in Sunset Park.
According to officials, the deputies were prepared to conduct a traffic stop when the vehicle happened to leave the area. Preliminary details suggest that the driver began accelerating after realizing that they were being followed by the deputies, whose lights and sirens were not activated.
Although deputies continued to follow the driver and alerted other area deputies to the situation, the KCSO maintains that they had terminated a pursuit. Shortly after, the Toyota collided with a Jeep, which was occupied by the victims.
First responders pronounced the male victim deceased at the scene. His passenger, a “small child,” was rushed to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries. As of this writing, officials have not confirmed the child’s relationship to the decedent.
The driver of the Toyota who fled the scene on foot, was arrested at about 5:00 a.m. the following day and booked into King County Jail for an investigation into vehicular homicide.
